FAQs

How much does it cost to hire a skip?

The cost of our skips depends on the type of skip, but unlike most suppliers it doesn’t depend on the length of hire. A typical skip hire is less than two weeks, but please note, unless otherwise agreed in advance, the maximum period for the placement of skips is four weeks, after which we reserve the right to arrange for skips to be collected or exchanged at the prevailing rate.

What does the price include?

The price quote online includes the hire of the skip, as well as delivery and collection. It does not include any additional equipment, permits or subsequent charges that might be incurred.

What kind of waste can I put in the skip?

Here is a summary of the waste types:

  • Mixed domestic: General household waste, including furniture, carpets and mattresses.
  • Mixed building: General domestic, building or commercial waste including light goods.
  • Garden: Outdoor waste, including soil and clay.
  • Light goods: Mixed domestic or commercial waste, including cardboard, plastic, paper, plaster, wood and glass.
  • Heavy goods: Mixed domestic or commercial waste, including brick, concrete and hardcore
  • Hazardous waste – This includes food waste, tyres, batteries, electrical appliances (WEEE waste), asbestos, paints, solvents, flammable liquids and chemicals, medical waste, fuel

Due to their weight and subsequent pick up challenges, garden and heavy goods waste can only be added to skips 8 yards and under. Mixed domestic, building and light goods waste can be added to any skip size. Hazardous waste will need to be reviewed by our team.

What skip sizes can I put garden or heavy waste in?

Due to their weight and subsequent pick up challenges, garden and heavy goods waste can only be added to skips 8 yards and under.

Can I put different types of waste into a skip?

You can mix your different types of waste in the same skip, providing you have the right skip size for those waste types. For example, garden and heavy goods waste can only be added to skips sizes of 8 yards and under. We will divide the waste out when we collect it.

How much can I fill a skip?

The waste should be level with the top of the skip. If it is filled above this level, there is a risk of it not being to be transported safely and excess charges may apply.

Can I order a skip for the same day?

If you order before 14:00 we can get a skip to you for the next day (excluding Saturdays and Sundays). If you need a skip ordering for the same day please give us a call on 0845 604 1365 and we will do our very best to deliver what you need.

How do I pay?

You can pay right here, online. You can also pay over the phone. All major debit and credit cards are accepted. Payment for online skip hire is taken in advance; this includes the cost of the skip hire, delivery and collection. Any additional payments – such as permits, equipment or even charges - will be taken separately over the phone.

Will HSS deliver my skip?

We partner with an accredited network of over 2,000 skip suppliers across the UK to supply you with the skip you need, when you need it. The company that delivers your skip will be a selected supplier of HSS. Your contract and point of contact is with HSS.

Will the skip need lights if on a public highway?

The skip will need lights and possible road cones if placed on a public highway. These will not come automatically with the skip, so please ask us what options are available to you.

Can I place my skip on a public road?

You can put your skip on a public road as long as you have a council permit. We can help you with that once you have ordered your skip online.

When do I require a Permit?

If the skip is being placed on a public highway you will need a permit from your local council. In most cases HSS Skips can arrange this for you and you can still order your skip with us online today. If you do require a permit we will contact your local council after the skip has been ordered and take any payments necessary afterwards on the phone. Please note that although we can often receive a permit within hours, some councils can take weeks to approve them.

Can I order online if I am an existing HSS customer?

If you are an existing HSS customer with a custom pricing plan, you will currently need to give us a call. We are planning to add the ability for existing customers to login and order in the near future.
